You see where the mirror is? I've taken down that mirror and I'm filling in that entire indented area with ledger stone.

i'd leave the texture unless its flaky already. better adherence with thinset

The way I've seen subs hang ledger stone is to staple metal lath to the wall,

Look up scratch coat. You can just use the thinset to do it. Staples should be

I’d use Hardi Backer or backer board, and liberally apply the thin set.
