I’d use Hardi Backer or backer board, and liberally apply the thin set.
If you try to put stone on something already stuck to the wall, your thin set will probably hold to the stone, but may tear off the adhesive already there. Plus you are going to grout, a d that will put more weight on the wall. Like was said before, you could do it the way you described in the OP, and it may work fine. But if you did it this way it would definitely work.
