I think your tires, brakes and trailer brake are the most important factor when
coming close to the recommendations for towing. Along with where you are towing it and the conditions.

Yes. The insurance claims I see with trailers are rarely about towing capacity

Towing is about stopping ability and control. For me it would depend on how often I towed it and where.

I wouldn't. But I err on the side of too much truck. Are the numbers you quoting for your specific truck?

Those are for my specific truck- looked up the spec for the engine, transmission, gear ratio, etc.

For a half ton chasis, I prefer a trailer to have a dry weight of 5500 lbs or

This is a 2013 F150 with a 3.73 gear ratio. From the window sticker it also has the upgraded GVWR and max tow packages

Yeah that’s what I am leaning towards. No reason to push the limits other than being lazy.

As far as rear differential ratios, I think some of the new ratios have come about as a result

Ratios are just torque multipliers and you have to combine it with tranny ratio and tire size. I have 3.73 in my 2500HD
