What was foolish about it? BYU's first ESPN contract was bigger than the MWC's conference TV contract post BYU/Utah.
The only chance BYU had to try and keep up financially with P5 was to go independent (not to mention try to garner respect by playing a quasi P5 schedule). Sure, the ideal would have been to join a P5, but since that wasn't an option, they did the next best thing.
