That reminds me of the first meeting after the Covey/Franklin merger
I worked at Covey Leadership back when they merged with Franklin Quest and our first company meeting after the merger was held at the big ice rink where the hockey team plays (Maverick Center???). As everyone was walking in they had a big jazz band playing and then all of a sudden a guy and a girl jumped out of their seats and started dancing to the music and it was very apparent that they didn’t dance much, let alone to jazz. But then they immediately started waiving in the rest of the crowd (very large crowd) to join them, surely expecting that once they introduced such a novel, team-building idea hundreds of us still sitting would jump right up and join them. Nobody budged. To their credit, they kept it up but it just got awkward and more awkard. It kind of seemed like the guy – probably from marketing – came up with the idea, being a spontaneously really enthusiastic guy, convinced his colleague how cool it will be when everyone joins in. Not so much. They had expressions on their face that was kind of like, “well if we stop now, we will look really dumb because it would be an obvious fail, so we need to just stay out here like we don’t care, but please in the name of all holy things, someone stop the music.” So they kept with it for the very long and awkward song. He tried to waive more people in a couple more times, but then gave up and mercifully, the song finally ended, and they could kind of save face and sit down to a thunderous, oh wait, I mean no applause - just a lot of people looking at each other quizzically, wondering what the hud was all of that about. I think all the Covey people were thinking, "Oh yewt THAT's what we got signed up for????"
