I was wondering the exact same thing that you are. Turns out that the water will fill all the way up on the speed queen, not so much on the others despite you stuffing it with more clothes

If it stinks then you are using too much soap and not maintaining it.

Good point. Front-loaders use about half the soap of top-loaders. Not sure why.

It might be because of the agitator. They typically have a post agitator still. The HE washers use a little nub.
