I generally like to travel without a tour, but Israel can be dangerous if you get lost and drive into the wrong corridor. If you can an LDS guide, that's even better.

Most of the places to go are overrun with tourists, but you'll learn a lot and you'll get to a couple places that hopefully you'll feel the sacredness of the spot.
