When you get too big you need to add incentives to make regular season count
Let’s say you are number 1 Alabama why not rest players the last game to save them for playoffs. You know you aren’t going to drop below 32 if you lose.
It also encourages teams to schedule difficult schedules so they can try for a first round bye. It also drives fan interest from smaller schools. Because they actually have a shot at winning a game
