Poor wording. If they did not say anything about religion or culture, they should just unequivocally say so. It is as simple as saying "we did not, in any way, express or implied, state that Coach Maile's religious or cultural background played or would play a role in determining his qualifications as our next head coach." Because they don't say something this forceful, they are saying a whole lot with their press release.
