The problem was that during those years, Majerus was at the peak of his career at Utah. It was understandable to see why the Johnsen's and Alex Jensen went to Utah. Reid was simply out-recruited for Madsen, Pollard, and Pope. Rodger probably went in with the belief that he didn't have to try as hard at recruiting those guys because BYU was the Church's university. I don't think that Pollard would have ever ended up at BYU to begin with. He was quite vocal about his feelings towards the Church when he was in college, and I once saw an interview where spoke of telling his dying father that he wasn't going on a mission and that he didn't believe in the Church.
