Utah/ LDS ballers tend to focus on perimeter shooting or post
Growing up in Utah I thought it was the standard to just have perimeter shooters and post player to keep it balanced. It wasn’t until late in my HS years from now playing in AAU games I started to notice most people relied on slashing.
BYU and Gonzaga have never really had slashers but relied on tall post shooters who could take the neutralize bigs with their outside shooting.
This year Gonzaga for the first time has slashers that are perimeter threats. It’s made their game complete and I don’t think they’re going to be stopped.
If you think of it this way.
Perimeter/ 3s = passing game

Post. = short yardage/ goal line package.

Slashers = run game.

BYU has never really had a run game. They just relied on fundamentals on defense and a strong fundamental on offense running either post plays or perimeter shooting. I don’t think it was because of lack of athleticism but the culture of playing fundamental basketball and not relying on athleticisms to score.
