I think the only players I would give an outside chance at the assist record
would be Luka and Trae Young. If Luka averaged 11 assists per game for the rest of his career, he would have to play until he was 37 (which I think is reasonable given his body type). Trae would have to play until he was 38 at the same average of 11 per game.

The reason I think that there is an outside chance is that teams are playing at a higher pace now than they did in Stockton's heyday, and it seems to be increasing. From 90-00', teams averaged 81.5 FGA's a game. Over the last 3 years, that number has shot up to about 89 FGA's per game, and shooting percentages have remained basically the same - so more made shots means more possible assists.

Working against both of them is that any significant injury basically destroys any shot they have. Stockton played 19 seasons and in 16 of those season played ALL 82 GAMES. That's crazy. One year he played in 64, one year 78, and in the strike-shortened 98-99 season he played all 50 games. The chance that Doncic or Young come close to that is basically nil. Also both players, but especially Young, probably shoot too much to realistically average 11 assists per season. Of the two, it seems like Doncic would be the most likely to come close.
