It's mostly due to the age of the deer. Fence them off and they get that back pretty quick.
A handful of years ago there was some kind of fenced off business at the mouth of Spanish fork canyon. Im not sure if the deer couldn't get out or if they knew they were safe there, but they grew enormous. Same genetics. There were a half a dozen bucks in there that would have been in the record books. Trucks were always stopped to look at them.

Same for the land around the military bases here west of Lehi. HUGE bucks. Again, same genetics.

Leave them alone and they'll grow.
