have to shovel which is very nice. However the cost to run it is very expensive - as others have said expect to spend a few hundred dollars per month. However-depending on your financial situation and work situation it can be amazing. I am frequently gone for work - so my wife and kids don't have to worry about getting snowed in. Also I live in the mountains where the snow persists so for me it is worth it. However if you just look at cost to install and cost to operate - it's a luxury I'm glad I can afford.
I have my burner cleaned once per year ($200) and other than that only the occasional leak to fix here and there. Overall not much mantance costs, but if the boiler goes....probably $10k to replace.
The real question to ask yourself- how much do you hate shoveling snow? Because snowy winter places are so much nicer to live in in the winter if you don't have to shovel every snowstorm. It is a nice thing to have that helps me not hate the winter.
