But using the word leadership in referring to a group of people, is not wrong.
"A change in leadership had the desired outcome." Is a grammatically correct sentence.

The 4th definition of Leadership in the Merriam-Webster dictionary refers leadership being used to mean leaders. The sentence they use as an example is "The party leadership."
