I don’t own some massive company, but my family is settled, I make really good money, I like what I do, I like who I work with, I see no reason to waste people’s time, I don’t want to create concern with my guys, and people depend on me.
All decent reasons Pope could conceivably say “no” as well. I don’t fault him at all, but it is possible to be like Lavell and figure you have such a great situation that more money doesn’t outweigh other factors that matter to you.
Again, I totally get him interviewing and I am glad he is a hot commodity. That is a good thing for us fans. But it would be great if he felt so happy where he is that incremental money or prestige didn’t outweigh how happy he is. That would be great and is possible (see Few). But from Peterson at Boise State to Anderson at Utah State - you can have a great thing going but most do look at the more money and more prestige and go for it - and good for them.
But as for me I have been a successful CFO and have been recruited to do it for others and I am too happy owning my own business and having a great situation. So it is possible. But good for Pope that he’s hot. Here’s hoping he stays a long time for other factors. Wife happy and kids happy can weigh heavy on you.
