Would you rather have a coach who nobody else wanted and he was just hanging...
...on for as long as he could or was happy just collecting a paycheck and being able to live and raise his family in Utah Valley?

Having a head coach who aspires for greatness with his own career and is highly motivated to progress bodes well for the program. It shows he’s trying to put the best product he can out there because he knows he will benefit beyond just collecting a paycheck. He also shows that by hiring assistant coaches who are in that same mind with desires for bigger and better.

We WANT that here. In the past we’ve had assistant coaches in both basketball and football who upon leaving the program had to go find jobs in the private sector. We don’t want a head coach who thinks BYU is the best he could do and he’s lucky to have this job and hopes with his fingers crossed that he can hang onto it as long as possible.

Fwiw we don’t want players at BYU who are like that either (just happy to have a scholarship so they can get a free eduction, graduate then look for a dental school).

Also fwiw I think most CB’ers thought early on that we were just a stepping stone for him in his coaching development and that we hoped to get as many years as we could with him before he got a big time offer. On the west coast there are not many coaching jobs better than Arizona.
