Thoughts on an appropriate length for an obituary? Are they normally around 750 words? 1000? My first draft for my
sister's is about 400 words right now, but I still anticipate 2-4 more paragraphs, one about some of her accomplishments in life and how they tie into her character traits of love and concern for others. Writing these is hard. How do you appropriately honor such a wonderful life? My first 2 paragraphs are below. I am trying to bring a sort of poetic beauty to this so it's not just a rote description of such a beautiful life. She hasn't passed yet, I don't know if it will be days or weeks, but we are trying to be as prepared as possible and get this written so even she can read it while she has the chance.

Heaven shines brighter with the light of ___________, who peacefully passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. With eternal love and gratitude we will daily cherish the legacy of selfless love she leaves behind. Her life was full of love for others that drove her to daily serve all around her and share with them her many talents.

Heidi’s last days were endured bravely and always with a smile. She radiated with an extraordinary amount of courage and hope that inspired all around her. Her loving husband and soulmate twin sister were with her continually. Hope and selfless concern for others were her guiding star to the very end, as shown by her smile that was as beautiful on her last day as it was on her first. No amount of pain could destroy her remarkably strong spirit that steeled her in her fight to never breathe a single word of complaint.
