This^^. As athletes get bigger/more athletic and steps get longer, the distance

you can go without traveling increases.

I can't imagine Naismith wanted the game to be that you could travel 1/3 of the court without dribbling.

As an aside, I wonder if that's why the defense was less than stellar. The guy was like . . ."well, he's gotta pull up and shoot here, he's out of steps without travelling."
