Similar issue with Southwest last December
Instead of flying SAT to HOU to CUN, I booked a direct out of Austin to Cancun. Some time later, I got an e-mail saying my flight schedule had changed. They had cancelled the direct and were routing me from Austin to Houston to Cancun, leaving Austin wayyy earlier than original flight. Like leave home for the 90 min drive to Austin at 3:00 AM.

I called and said if they are cancelling the direct flight, I wanted to fly out of San Antonio instead. She then says they can only honor the original fare for the same origin/destination city pair (e.g., Austin-Cancun). If I switch to SAT-CUN then I would have to pay for the fare differential. I should have just asked for my money back (which I could have done), because with Covid and HS soccer, we weren’t sure if we would end up going, but I ended up switching to a direct from HOU to Cancun for about the same price as my original fare. I’d rather drive to Houston for a direct than drive to Austin really early, only to fly through Houston.

Then we didn’t end up going… so I’m sitting on Southwest credits I need to use up.
