He helped me pack the first time, explained gear for different weather, nights, cold etc. Then told me I was on my own, and if I forgot something, it was on me.

Some of those mistakes you will only ever make once, like packing a super light sleeping bag because you thought it would be warm at night like it was during the day.

I did the same thing for my kids. Sort of framed the way we parent, although it was tough at first for my wife.
