I've met people abroad who are only there because that's what they can afford.
You can get by just fine in Cuenca, Ecuador, on $1500 a month. On that budget, you can have a nice little place by the river, eat in modest restaurants, and even have someone come clean your house for you once a week.
Some of these people are happy with that lifestyle. Others don't bother learning the language, and don't really want to be there, but it's either that, or poverty back in the States.
