I think there's an overarching cultural phenomenon that is making most of our
pass times more boring than they once were. I'm sure someone smarter than me has written on the subject. But I think the competitive drive for efficiency is making everything more boring. Take a look at the film industry. Disney has a formula. They stick to the formula because they know it works. It's efficient. The result is the same movies being pumped out year after year. There is zero risk.

The music industry has the same problem. Music execs know which 5 or 6 chords and rhythms are the most popular so almost all major label music rehashes the same chords and the same rhythms over and over. There's no risk.

In basketball, people finally realized that 3 > 2 so if you shoot 30% from three and 44% from two you are going to score more points shooting threes. So now every team shoots a lot of threes. You almost never seen post ups.

In baseball, they realized that home runs were the most efficient way to score runs.

On and on it goes.
