Several of them ended up wrestling for wrestling powerhouse schools like Iowa, Minnesota, etc. A kid who was a year younger than me was a 3X state champion, and he finished 2nd (by a point) at nationals as a senior. He had every big wrestling program in the country beating down his door, but he blew all of them off because he didn't want to be a college athlete. He just wanted to go to college and have a relatively normal experience. He didn't want to struggle with constantly missing lectures because he was on the road for a tournament, or having to be continually trying to diet and cut weight, or having a huge portion of his day consumed by practice and conditioning. He had talked to multiple college athletes, and he just decided that it wasn't worth it for him personally. His parents were also fairly well-off, so he didn't have to worry about how to pay for college.
