if you want to stay at your job but upper management positions require you to check that box then online/part time is fine.

If you want to change jobs - full time is really the only option. Many engineers who did part time trying to break out of their role just ended up at their old job as it paid better than the offers they got and they didn't get a guaranteed bump from their company.
