Even in the case that there is only like 4 or 5 current big12 teams left, the top half of the AAC would rather join them
and assume the Big12 name - simply for the cache and the opportunity to dump the dregs of the AAC conference. It's easier to join a new conference than it is to kick out members.
Schools like Houston and SMU have been coveting Big12 membership for close to 30 years. They'll jump at the opportunity simply for the name even if it's a shell of what it was.

The craziest scenarios to me are those that think the AAC will grab the B12 leftovers, and not the other way around.
