If the Freon is too low, the compressor won’t turn on. So it’s possible that’s the problem. But who knows.

Yeah, looks like the best bet is Freon with no leak stop if you can get it and then have it repaired later.

Freon is a general term for refrigerants that wasn't initially used for 134A but most people do now.
