It's not just USC vs ISU either; compare Tennessee and Boise in 2019
There's a few examples here...if you get tired of them, skip down to the *****

In 2018, BYU played Arizona. Arizona finished 7-6 the 2017 season (losing 4 of their last 5 games - though the did manage to sneak a win against Oregon State in there...), ended up 3rd in the PAC12 South, fired their head coach and brought nobody of note in. They would then finish 2018 with a 5-7 record and 4th in the PAC12 South. The BYU/Arizona game drew 1.3 million viewers.

In 2019, BYU played Tennessee. Tennessee hadn't been bowl eligible for several years, and had finished the 2018 season 5-7, including 2-6 in conference play and dead last in the SEC East (just behind Vanderbilt). Coming off that terrible season, Tennessee opened against Georgia State...and lost. So this was clearly not a good team. But the game still drew 1.6 million viewers and is talked about as one of BYU's "big" wins (along with Texas [who was similarly in a tailspin], USC, and Wisconsin [USC and Wisconsin are legit big wins)

Also in 2019, BYU played Boise St. Boise St was coming off multiple 10+ win seasons, including a relatively recent NY6 victory. At the time Boise was undefeated and #14 in the country. The game drew 562k viewers, less than half as many as Arizona or Tennessee, despite being a better opponent and a putative rivalry game.

Or speaking of rivalries, let's look at the 2018 game against Utah St. USU is generally terrible but the 2018 team was actually quite good, finishing 11-2 and ranked in the top 25. Plus it's an in-state rivalry, so it should get a lot of attention...or 617k viewers, again less than half of games against bad Arizona and Tennessee teams.

Or in a season where BYU was really good (2020), ranked #9 in the country and flying high, but disparaged for having no real tests against quality opponents. And then we got to play an undefeated Boise St. This was a big-time matchup. #9 BYU getting a chance to prove themselves against a strong, undefeated program that had finished top 25 for 3 consecutive years. It drew 680k viewers.

Granted, this isn't all a result of BYU fan mindset. It's that the games against bad P5 teams were both on ESPN, whereas the games against objectively better G5 teams were on ESPN2, and it's tough to overstate how big a factor that is. But it is also partly that, we as fans, have grown conditioned to value the P5 moniker. You see it all the time here when we talk about beating a bad Tennessee team in double overtime like it's a big win that validates us...even though Georgia State did the exact same thing the previous week (somewhat more emphatically actually). But a win that same season against an undefeated and ranked Boise St is brushed off and forgotten. Because Boise isn't P5. And Tennessee is. For all the complaints about P5 favoritism and giving them more attention/ranking/respect than is due by their play, we do the exact same thing.
