The silliness is part of why it’s perfect for BYU’s squeaky clean, milk drinking
family friendly atmosphere. I’ve posted on this in the past, but I like hearing popcorn popping.

1) it means we just kicked someone’s trash and there is levity and celebration in the stands.

2) when I came to Utah there were aspects of the culture that shocked me, like LDS related billboards, Book of Mormon commentary commercials on the radio, etc. It was so strange to see the religion I was raised in as a tiny minority be part of the culture the way it is in Utah. However, since BYU is operated by the church hearing a primary song at a football game was not strange, as was noted above it’s an inside joke that even as a college student I found amusing.

3) when my kids were young there is this moment of recognition that the school we root for is connected to the church we go to and it makes them feel part of the group. We sing this song in primary and it’s also at the football games. It makes them feel part of the experience.

I went to a Nationals baseball game this summer. One of the players used Baby Shark as his walk up music. The whole stadium was singing baby shark and doing the hand motions. Was it silly? Yeah. We’re people having fun? Yeah. Was it a professional sporting event? Yep.

There’s nothing to be self conscious about.
