It's not about the communist party. Its about a sense of purpose derived from the community, not from self. This is present in other eastern cultures, Japan specifically, and it is in stark contrast to the Western sense of self above all else.
You can condemn China's politics and human rights abuses while acknowledging how remarkable their sense of community is. Their national identity is thousands of years old.
I'm not saying it's superior or anything, but the west is extremely me-focused. That isn't the case is a number of east-Asian cultures.
