It basically pins their arm inside the trap. When the coon reaches in to get
the bait, they hit the trigger that releases the spring. The spring pushes a piece of metal from the wall of the trap against the opposite wall, making the opening smaller than when the critter put it's arm into it. They can't get their arm out, so they sit there with a leg/arm in the trap.
