No. As someone who has obsessively followed uniforms for 15+ yrs, this is recent
Oregon, in the mid to late 2000s, really got into the alternate uniform game. Oregon became cool because of Nike alternates, customized equipment (Oregon logos on cleats and gloves), and unique fonts (Belotti Bold was the hot Oregon font back in the day); other teams largely followed suit. Some schools embraced new (totally opened up the playbook and let Nike design some truly wild uniforms), while others were more traditional (for example, Oklahoma and Alabama allowed alternates, but only so far as they aped uniforms from decades past). There was a really dark period (no pun intended) where so many teams released black alternates that uniform aficionados termed the trend "Black for Black's Sake" or BFBS.

We've effectively ridden that trend to the end of the line. Every team has alternate jerseys (lots of them), most teams have different helmets, and many teams have unique fonts (for example, Iowa, USC, and Michigan all have traditional uniforms, but all have number fonts that are unique to each school). Apparently, the next step is sideline swag. I expect this to be very lucrative, since sideline swag comes at a premium (Dri-Fit polos are expensive) and can easily be resold. Nike now has the opportunity to sell many, many more polos and hats.

Simply put, sideline swag wasn't something on anyone's radar in 2006. Social media looked completely different in 2006. If any equipment director had created a social media account previewing sideline apparel back then, people would have just assumed that he was autistic and ignored it. To the extent it was even noticed, it would have been mocked and parodied.

We're only here, at the (frankly ridiculous) point of tweeting out alternate coaching polos because of the ~20 years of uniform swag between Belotti's Oregon and the present day. And none of that is Bronco's fault.
