Rhubarb 3rd String
Grew up in LA, I was 9 and watched Gibson hit his 2-run, 2-out homer to beat A's
in the 9th in the '88 World Series. I was already a Dodgers fan but there was no going back after that. They'd just beaten the very tough Mets in 7 games and were up against the very tough A's. Looking at the Dodgers roster and watching highlights there is no reason they should have won either of those series. They looked unathletic, overmatched, and out-talented compared to both of those teams (take a look at Mickey Hatcher playing outfield - looks like a 58-year old softball player with a dad-bod) but Hershiser was just all around awesome and dominating, and they were just so clutch. I think about the Dodgers losing Muncy now and compare that to when they lost Gibson and there is no comparison as far as the impact - Gibson was like their only real power hitter with 25 homers that year and didn't even play in the World Series apart from the 1 at bat.
