1) Innocent until proven guilty. We need to be sure people’s livelihoods and reputations aren’t thrown away on hearsay. We need to avoid the trial of public opinion and offer first the benefit of doubt; it’s a mercy all of us would want in his situation. Hopefully that was done with Gruden. I’m not sure but I doubt we’re privy to all necessary info, just the most sensational that may or may not be true, the stuff that grabs viewers.
2) Our first instinct ought to be to forgive, and that’s not my idea. We don’t need to destroy somebody’s career and reputation every time they make mistakes, even big ones. Sometimes it’s admittedly unwise or not feasible, but it doesn’t need to be automatic. Again, we would want the same mercy afforded us.
