There were 80 L88 Vettes built in 1968
The one I had was the first one ordered in the Denver Region of Chevrolet. I didn't know of another one around until years later when they started showing up at auctions.

Mine was a silver coupe. Had the special suspension, exhaust, no a/c, no power steering, no radio, close-ratio 4speed, transistor ignition, etc. It was built to drag race. The stated HP was 430 I believe to keep the insurance companies happy it was said but was much higher, probably well over 500 HP.

I think they must have deleted some of the interior shielding and insulation because it was hot inside to drive and had no a/c.

It was very fast but couldn't be driven regularly on the street as lower RPM's would cause the plugs to foul, had to keep the RPM's up and take it out and blow the carbon out after driving it. I had several sets of plugs in different heat ranges to experiment with to keep them from fouling.

There were at least a couple of other 427 HP versions built in 1968, and other years. So there are plenty of 427 Corvettes around, just few L88's. I'm pretty sure there was a 390 HP version and a 435 HP version (aluminum heads and three two barrel carbs). There were many more of those built.

Because the L88's were raced it was likely the engines would eventually be blown out and replaced. So there would be few with original blocks.
