I don't disagree with some of your points. I'd use college basketball as a sort
of case study to highlight my argument, though.
There are other factors, but I think you can build a very compelling case that an under-emphasis on the regular season has hurt CBB in the long run. It's balanced out with an incredible format for March Madness (something MLS could never come close to duplicating). But, basketball has a lot of issues with viewership and attendance in the regular season that have gotten worse over time.
