What's funny is that I was going to use CBB as an example of why single
elimination tourneys don't ruin the regular season. I think that March Madness is probably the single most entertaining sporting event of the year and I love it. Does it ruin the regular season for people knowing that there will probably be a Cinderella team that makes a deep run off of a few lucky wins? Maybe it does for some, for me it has no bearing on the amount of college basketball I would watch. That is just anecdotal on my part though. I watch college basketball during the regular season because I love sports and can't stand all the dumb singing, dancing, and reality shows that pass for entertainment.

In my mind the thing that hurts the college basketball regular season most is not the tournament format but that overall it is just not that great of a product. Take away the nostalgia and you have a lot of bad shooting, poor ball handling, sloppy turnovers, slow pace of play, and unathletic players. There are just so many teams with so many players that not all of them can be good and so you get a very watered-down product.
