True character use to be owning up to what you did, by yourself, especially because they get caught. And learn not be to followers. That is how I learned good character, by messing up in my youth and getting caught, learning not to say or do inappropriate things in public or private.

But, today, people hide behind screens (we CBers do this). They sometimes forget that they are not behind a screen and become live and decide to storm the capital, be involved in protests that turn into riots, chant vulgarities, etc... And they think they won't get caught. Very interesting times.
