A friend had a funny approach - they would stick post-it notes on the bottom or backs of items they wanted - while their parents were still living. Piano, kitchen table, artwork, etc.

My parents have (semi-joking) warned us they will come back and haunt us from the grave if we fight over inheritance!

I can foresee some differences of opinion for physical momentos, but I can't imagine distribution of assets causing any divide at all between any of my siblings. Part of that is the culture my parents have instilled. While they are wealthy, they are giving, never focused on accumulation of wealth, and expected us to work. Each of the kids are independently doing well. Inheritance will not be relied on by anyone for maintenance.
