First off, the game was early in the season (first third)
No one was really thinking NC at that point. BYU was dominating the game but Hawaii scored on a blocked punt. With close to 9 minutes left in the 4th Q, Hawaii was at the one yard line with BYU up 2 points. Hawaii was kept out of the end zone, and Morrell had a hand in that, though it is possible BYU’s DL would have stopped the play for no gain as the DL and LBs stood up the LOS. Anyway, Hawaii took the lead with FG, and went up 1 point. BYU would just need a FG to retake the lead. If Hawaii scored a TD, BYU would need a TD. As it was, the very next drive BYU went down the field largely unhindered for a 5-6 play TD drive. There is no reason to think BYU would not have scored the TD if Hawaii had scored the TD. Those who claim BYU would have lost if Morrell had not done what he did are tacitly admitting or claiming that BYU was mentally weak and would have folded after going down 5 points instead of 1. We know that is not true when looking at close games they won that year including late come from behind wins such as versus Wyoming. With that type of thinking, BYU should have thrown in the towel down 7 to Michigan in the 4th quarter.
