So I know one of the biggest donors at the U and have talked to them at various times about this. Chris Hill wanted to
End BYU sports. He thought that BYU was beneath the U and wanted them to go the way of the other instate programs because they were the program that would hurt the U despite the new conference affiliation. But this is the way he treated life. He had no time for you if you could not help him achieve something or could hurt his standing. He would rather ignore you if you were insignificant, and treated programs like that. This is the reason he ignored Utah St and the other instate programs, but truly tried to diminish BYU’s athletics programs, because he both hated BYU and knew BYU was the only program of concern. He would have done everything in his power to end all series with BYU, because he thought it diminished BYU. The funny thing is that many of the big donors would not allow it.

I think despite his attempts, BYU helped make Utah what it is currently in the PAC over the last 10 years because while up until recently, BYU was good but not great in FB. But most of the National media looked at that dominant win streak as better because it was BYU and elevated the U’s National standing. With that said, it has actually benefited BYU as well, because it created a hunger in the athletics programs that wasn’t there before Utah joined the PAC.

Would BYU have tried to end Utah…no, because it has always been a mutually beneficial relationship no matter what we as fans want to believe. But Hill took his best shot, and he blew it and unknowingly helped create what might end up being a Golden Age of BYU sports if we can continue to see improvement, which is what I expect.
