I think the point is that there's no obvious benefit to specializing.
If you're a good enough athlete to excel at a sport, you'll excel at it. If you're not, you won't. In the meantime, the 99.9% of people who aren't the top-tier athletes should play whatever sports they want for the ancillary benefits.
