I was a kid in CA in the 80s. My friends mom's generally didn't work. Nowadays, almost every mom works because that's often the only way to make it in places like the bay area. Maybe my experience is a geographical oddity though, but I'd have assumed it was definitely the opposite, that there are more dual-income families now than before.
