I tow with a half ton quite a bit... I'm not comfortable towing more than 2/3 -
3/4 of tow rating and tongue weight because of unknown adds (weight, gear, people, anything in the bed)
If you are over 5000 lbs and 500+ tongue weight I'd also very strongly recommend a weight distribution hitch (also known as an anti-sway hitch)
