They don’t “take charge” really. They just know what they can get away with and
know what’s been reinforced. If you reinforce or allow bad habits as a puppy they will keep those unless you show them a more appropriate behavior that satisfies the need they’re trying to fulfill that’s natural. We see those as “naughty” behavior only because we don’t like it or it damages something, such as digging or barking, but to dogs they simply are instincts that if they don’t have appropriate ways to fulfill they’ll make up their own ways.

But yeah training them early is good because they’ll learn before developing habits….it’s just false belief that bad habits/behaviors are out of a desire to be in control. That’s not how dogs work.
