When I order a burger at a restaurant, fast-food or otherwise, I usually order it medium.
I’ve had a food safety manager certification. If I opened a restaurant, I would probably cook them medium by default, and allow made-to-order of medium-rare.
When I cook my own, I make them medium-rare.

If you’re bad enough at cooking that you can’t tell the difference between raw and medium rare, medium’s a good choice.
