Agreed, and if it was just choosing between Rudy & Ayton I'd take Rudy
But the point is that it isn't.

Even choosing a pretty weak trade return for Gobert (that I suspect many here will immediately dismiss as not worth it), and if we think (worst-case) that Ayton requires Hardaway and a 1st in a S+T....

Then your options are

Ayton + DFS + Wood + 1st

or

Gobert + Whiteside

Gobert is better than Ayton. But not enough to make up that difference.
