Maybe they used a hand scanner to measure tread depth?
I had a tech at Discount Tire do a tread depth scan and wear assessment on my tires just the other day. I’d never seen it done with a scanner before.

I've had bad luck with JL. And what do they mean "scan the tire"? You look at the thing and inspect the wear marks.
