People get used to things really quickly. And "those weird Mormons and their backwards beliefs" seem a lot less weird the more you get to know the people.

During my first year in the Air Force Academy, there were only 2 LDS guys in my squadron, me and one other. His roommate was a pretty fundamentalist, home-schooled evangelical Christian from California and told my LDS buddy literally every day that he was going to [am I allowed to use a cuss word if it's in the original meaning of the word, not intended as anything else?]. It made for an awkward roommate situation to say the least.

After our first year, my buddy left for a mission (I'd served prior to starting), and then didn't return afterwards, opting to go to BYU. But a few years later his former roommate tracked me down and asked if I was still in touch with him, wanting to apologize for how he'd treated him. He'd been exposed to a bit more of the world, had met a bunch more 'Mormons' and realized that we were actually pretty great people.
