Employers give physicians 15 minutes to see each patient. Within that window you
need to interact with a patient who's often old/slow/demented, interact with their family, figure out what's trying to be said and how you can help. You then have to document with your own hands (for the vast majority of us without scribs) basically every word that is said and every risks/benefit, etc... You personally have to place all the orders through a computer chart maze and schedule your own follow up appointments (some docs don't have to do this step, I do). You then get these messages, where you need to call some random $$ number with a 25 digit case number. Its like calling the airline with a 5 step phone tree. If you do get through you are place on hold waiting to speak to a provider which is some nurse in Georgia. You then have to restate word for word the clinical interaction you had and why you are ordering the test. They'll then take time to "review" your note and ask why you didn't document such and such. During this time you need to logon to a computer using a 18 digit password with 3 special characters, find the clinic note and read what you put. You then have to place an addendum to that. You then wait to get your 15 digit confirmation code. You send that to your staff. They'll probably send back some questions about it. Oh yea, and you're not paid for any of that.

Basically 90-95% of what we do is basic data entry or secretarial work and just saying oh they can call for 5 minutes to help out the insurance company is dumb. Then people are pissed because they can't understand why their doctor can't see them on-time. I get it that no one cares but its just lame all around.
